So what in the world is a professional organizer? A professional organizer is someone who has a knack for bringing order into chaos! Simple as that. The profession actually began after the 1980's and is derived from the study of home economics, task management, and time management. Some organizers do it all while others specialize in certain areas such as home organizing, office organizing, organizing with people who are in life transitions (moving homes, deaths, newborn, etc.), working with ADHD clients, hoarders, etc.
Organizers assist those who are burdened by the clutter in their lives by teaching systems of organization that help relieve stress and allow clients to exercise the use of their time more effectively. Hear me out here, the situation does not always have to be so dire for someone to hire an organizer. There are many clients who simply need assistance with a one-time project or those who need inspiration & encouragement to help them maintain the good habits they are already practicing. Organizers are not only problem-solvers who carry the tips & tricks of organizing, they also have to be empathetic and very patient as they interact with clients and their personal lives and spaces.
Although there is a big community of organizers from around the world, generally speaking or at least from my experience, professional organizing does not seem a very familiar profession for those who are not in the business. I believe that the skills of an organizer prove a necessary trade most especially in our busy, modern world! It’s a pretty cool gig, so I decided to not only write about what we do but to also come up with a few reasons why hiring a pro organizer can be very beneficial:
Reason #1 Motivation
Think of a pro organizer as like a personal trainer. Trainers know their clients are most likely capable of physical activity but they are there to provide the mental and emotional push people need to get in shape and stay in shape. Likewise, a pro organizer motivates and provides that encouraging push people need to get tidy and stay organized.
Reason #2 Results
Let’s face it, we all get busy. Tidying out our stuff and accomplishing our organizing projects can get overwhelming. But pro organizers have a determination to bring order to chaos! Their mere presence promises results. Organizing for me has to be focused, efficient work. I will show you how it feels to have control over your space instead of letting your things have control over you.
Reason #3 Outside perspective
It’s easy to get used to what our spaces look like because we see them all the time. Even a cluttered desk may feel comforting because perhaps we’ve simply formed habits that are accustomed to leaving our belongings unorganized. A pro organizer is not only trained to leave judgement out the door but is there to encourage fresh ideas along with tried and tested systems of organization.
There are so many psychological and emotional elements tied to what we possess and how we arrange, utilize, and store our belongings. That is why every space an organizer puts in order to form a more harmonious arrangement matters. The tactile nature of an organizer’s job provides a practical way to help others create good change and invite healthier habits in their lives. The visual results of an organizing session are immediate and as any organizer would hope, will serve their clients in deeper life-changing ways.
